The Great Wave

The Great Wave, a wood block print by Katsushika Hokusai, early 1800s

A frame on page 12 of Cigars of the Pharaoh, by Hergé, 1955

Compare page 12 of Cigars of the Pharaoh—in which Tintin and Snowy are riding in a small boat, facing a huge wave—to Katsushika Hokusai’s early-1800s wood block print “The Great Wave,” from “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji.” With a little imagination, you can see Mt. Fuji disguised as a wave in the center rear of Hergé’s homage.
